The World and Its Pear Tree – an installation by Noële Baker
The story of the 9/11 Survivor Tree. A story of Resilience
In the aftermath of 9/11, firemen discovered the remains of a burnt, badly damaged pear tree. The tree was nursed back to life and replanted at Ground Zero, NYC,10 years later. Every spring it blossoms into a magnificent white bouquet. A witness to the passing of time and a true embodiment of RESILIENCE, the pear tree stands as a symbol of rebirth and sends us a message of hope.

L’arbre qui a survécu au 11 septembre. Une d’histoire de résilience
À New York, un poirier calciné, mort en apparence, a été découvert dans les décombres du 11 septembre. Renaissant de ses cendres grâce aux soins de la Nursery du Bronx, l’arbre a survécu, il a été replanté à Ground Zero, NYC, 10 ans plus tard. Il se transforme chaque printemps en un majestueux bouquet blanc.
Témoin du passage du temps et parfait exemple de RESILIENCE, il transmet à tout un chacun un message d’espoir. Elle laisse chacun ému et pensif.

‟Noële Baker, sculptor with more than 30 years of creation behind her, uses her gentle touch to talk to us about the fundamental events of our human existence. She informs us about moments of separation and our resilience. Her work deals with the notion of time and how it links to our destiny and our mortality.
Her touch is light, joyful, poetic and transparent. Her elongated figues link the earth and the heaveans, the cycle of our being. Cast in bronze or using opage Mylar spilling from huge wooden spools, her works explore her ideas about life. The spools bring back chilhood memories, rich in museum visits, literature and poetry. The Mylar becomes a ‘ New York storyboard ’ which recalls the music of our childhoods. Baker’s vision is translated into form with a few ink marks and water-soluble pastels and it whispers to us its impression of humanity and reaches our hearts.”

‟Le Temps qui nous scelle à notre mortalité, notre destinée, thèmes capitaux exprimés avec transparence, gaieté et essentielle poétique, sont relatés par notre sculptrice -plasticienne. Noële Baker conte avec une légèreté sage et consciencieuse, les évènements forts d’une existence humaine, tels que la résilience et la séparation et amène à ces essences profondes, une dimension aérienne. Fille de New-York city, baignée dès son plus jeune âge dans les effluves des musées, de la littérature, et dans l’art de la transmission du savoir, Noële Baker nous offre, aujourd’hui chez Mines d’Art, tout son merveilleux bagage de plus de trente années de labeur. De son amont à son aval, la galerie présentera ses sculptures longilignes, reliant la terre aux cieux, et sa nouvelle série sur tourets de chantier. De la Terre de Paris immortalisée dans le bronze, Noële Baker s’explore dans la chair du mylar opacifié. Tournez-les à votre guise, comme les papiers de musique de nos orgues de barbarie qui nous ramènent à notre enfance, ces « storyboards » new-yorkais. La lunette de Noële Baker a été taillée pour un monde en images qu’elle concrétise à travers ces quelques notes d’encre et de néocolor qui déposent sur notre coeur, un souffle de l’Humain Universel.”

‟A female image that recurs as a thread throughout her work, has haunted Noele Baker since the early stages of her career as a sculptor. Embodied with generous curves and often integrated with long rods, this womanly figure represents in turn goddess or a messenger from another world. In the artist’s 2006 project sponsored by the Hans Wilsdorf Fondation for the Red Cross’ training Center ECOGIA (ICRC), she also used it as a figure head.”

‟Depuis les débuts de son travail de sculptrice, Noële Baker est hantée par un personnage féminin, qui sert de fil conducteur dans son parcours artistique. Tout en courbes et posées le plus souvent sur de longues tiges très fines, cette figure de femme se fait tour à tour déesse, messagère d’un autre monde ou encore figure de proue comme, par exemple, dans le projet que lʼartiste a créé pour ECOGIA au centre de formation de la Croix-Rouge à Versoix en 2006. Ce projet a été sponsorisé par la Fondation Hans Wilsdorf.”

Ariane, the bright one
« …Seduced by Theseus , Ariane helps him to escape from the maze. On the understanding that he will marry her, she gives him the thread to spoil behind him so that he can find his way out of the labyrinth. But, after having killed the Minotaur, the hero leaves her on the island of Naxos …In a turn of fate, over the centuries, Ariane, the bright one, has become more strongly remembered than her lover and has left her name on the red thread which is the pathway through the middle of storms… »

«… Séduite par Thésée, Ariane aide celui-ci à s’échapper du labyrinthe. Contre la promesse de l’épouser, elle lui fournit le fil qu’il déroule derrière lui afin de retrouver son chemin. Mais, après avoir tué le Minotaure, le héros l’abandonne sur l’île de Naxos …En renversant les codes, Ariane, la lumineuse, a éclipsé son amant dans la mémoire des siècles et laissé son nom à ce fil rouge conducteur qui règle la conduite au milieu des orages… »
